Since 1990 he has been in charge of the Regional Analysis Division, an R&D group involved with the analysis of urban and regional issues and the development of Geographic information systems (GIS) applications.

The focus of his research interests are on:
- Analysis of urban areas using quantitative techniques
- Development of GIS applications for: Urban transportation planning, Water resources management, Environmental resources, Analysis of regional economies, Cultural heritage management
- Development of web sites with city information
- Analysis of statistical databases
He has participated in about 30 projects funded by EU and various Greek organizations and has published about 100 papers in scientific journals and conference proceedings.

He holds a Ph.D. in Transportation Systems from the department of Civil Engineering, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (1981), a Master of Science in Construction Management from the same university (1976) and a B.S. in Civil Engineering from Columbia University (1975). In USA, he was employed at the Association of Bay Area Governments (ABAG), (1980-1989) developing land use transportation models and databases with census and socioeconomic data. He taught on a part time at Stanford University, USA as a consulting associate professor (1987-89) and performed various consulting assignments on GIS applications developments with Urban MicroSystems, Oakland, USA (1990-2001).

In Greece, in addition to his position at FORTH he was part time lecturer at the Athens University of Economics and Business (AUEB) (2002-2008). On the private sector he has been involved with InfoCharta Ltd. and InfoTraffic SA startup companies in Greece concentrating on the development of digital street maps for Greece and various intelligent transportation system applications for road telematics (taxi radio dispatch systems, AVL, city portals with traffic information and others).
