How to arrive in Heraklion
Heraklion is reachable by boat and plane from mainland Greece and by plane from European cities. During the summer there are numerous regular and chapter flights linking the "Nikos Kazantzakis" airport of Heraklion with other European and Domestic airports. The two main companies operating flights to and from Greek destinations including Athens are Olympic Airlines and Aegean Airlines. The duration of the flight from Athens is 35 minutes and from Thessaloniki is 60 minutes.
The two main shipping companies offering boat trips to and from Piraeus are Minoan Lines and ANEK. The duration of the trip varies according to the ship type. Fast Ferries need 6 hours (daylight trip) or 8 hours (over night trip), while conventional Ferries need 9 hours. There is a variety of accommodation standards offered by all ships ranging from Luxury 2-birth Cabins to deck seats.
How to reach FORTH
The Foundation for Research and Technology-Hellas (FORTH) is situated 10 km south west from downtown Heraklion. Urban buses serve the transportation to and from FORTH (I.T.E in Greek) several times per day. (See timetable below). The buses of this line enter FORTH premises. The duration of the trip from downtown Heraklion to FORTH is approximately 30-35 minutes.
Urban bus line 11 links downtown Heraklion with the University Hospital (See map above). This line has a stop approximately 300 meters away from FORTH entrance. In order not to miss the stop, please consult the bus driver asking for the stop to ITE. The frequency of this service is approximately every 15 minutes.
